Postdoctoral research will address protease drug targets in the production of peptide neurotransmitters in neurological pain and mental diseases. Proteases responsible for the production and degradation of the endogenous opioid, beta-endorphin, and related peptide neurotransmitters will be investigated for inhibition by small molecules tested from NIH Clinical Collections and marine natural product molecules. Biochemistry of protease inhibition and cellular regulation by inhibitors will be assessed in neuronal cell models. Projects involve studies of protease activity with molecular probes, molecular and cell neurobiology, genetics, and pharmacology to extend knowledge of disease mechanisms to therapeutic strategies. Research will be conducted in the laboratory of Professor Vivian Hook, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Dept. of Neurosciences, School of Medicine. Experience in peptide and protease biochemistry, HPLC, cell and molecular biology, as well as mass spectrometry is needed for the research. PhD in neurochemistry, biochemistry, chemistry, or related field is required. US citizenship or permanent residence is required by training grant. Send CV and names/email of 3 referees to vhook@ucsd.edu
