The Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania seeks a Post-Doctoral Fellow to begin fall 2013, for two years. The fellow will work at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI with Dr. Peter Railton (Philosophy, Michigan), as well as collaborating with other senior scientists, including Dr. Martin E.P. Seligman (Psychology, Penn), Dr. Roy Baumeister (Psychology, Florida State), and Dr. Chandra Sripada (Philosophy and Psychiatry, Michigan). The fellow will conduct original philosophical and/or psychological research, prepare publications, and participate in colloquia and research retreats for a large research grant on Prospective Psychology - exploring questions about the nature and role of evaluative representations of potential future acts and outcomes in regulating thought, feeling, and action.
This postdoc is meant to encourage interdisciplinary work, bringing together insights from philosophy, psychology, and related disciplines. Within philosophy, such work could be in epistemology, value theory, theory of action, game theory and decision theory, theory of mind, moral psychology, or formal modeling, among others. Within psychology and cognitive science, related areas of research include planning, predicting, and anticipating possible events, learning, goal-directed behavior, social psychology, cognitive, affective, and motivational neuroscience, implementation intentions, subjectivity, consciousness, imagination, creativity, and complex systems analysis. If appropriate, grant funds and resources will be available to the fellow for experimental research. No teaching is required.
Individuals with a Ph.D. in philosophy, psychology, or cognitive science are encouraged to apply. The Ph.D. must be successfully completed before taking up the postdoc.
