Position Description:
The UM Communication Neuroscience Laboratory seeks a post doctoral fellow in the Research Center for Group Dynamics (RCGD) to collaborate on interdisciplinary research on persuasion, health communication, message propagation, social cognition, and media effects in the context of traditional and new media. Research in our lab connects neuroscience measures to real-world outcomes, with a focus on health communication; we employ multiple methods, including neuroimaging, psychophysiology, behavioral observation, implicit measures, survey and other self-report measures. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of research, including design and execution of studies, in addition to supporting day-to-day activities in the lab. Among many opportunities made possible by this position, the successful applicant will have opportunities to collaborate with researchers at the Institute for Social Research (ISR), the Center for Health Communication Research, the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, the Department of Communication Studies, and the Department of Psychology. The selected candidate will be expected to take responsibility for a wide range of research related tasks, depending on expertise and interests, and will be expected to take a leading intellectual role on a core project of interest to the applicant.
This will begin as a one-year appointment. The possibility of an appointment extension after that date is possible assuming satisfactory performance and conduct, the availability of work, continued funding, and by mutual consent.
Position Qualifications:
Ph.D., with background in psychology, neuroscience, computer science, SI, mathematics, public health, communication studies, biostatistics, or a related field
Strong quantitative skills required, including, but not limited to:
• Statistical analysis skills (e.g. in R, SPSS, Matlab, SAS, HLM, other)
• Programming skills (e.g. in Matlab, Python, bash, etc.)
Required:
• Research and project management experience in a university setting
• Previous supervisory experience and ability to assist in the training of lab personnel
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as in a team and be proactive in problem solving under the direction of the PI
• Excellent communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to work independently on multiple tasks and projects, developing solutions to basic technical problems
• Excellent organizational skills with keen attention to details required
• Creativity
• Desire/ability to write papers and grants in collaboration with the research team
Successful candidates may also have:
• Previous experience or working knowledge with fMRI data (e.g. SPM, fsl, AFNI or other imaging analysis package)
• Stimulus design and presentation in MATLAB, PsychoPy, or Presentation
• Web skills (e.g. ability to write/edit html)
• Previous experience in health communication research fields
• Previous experience working with IRB
• Recruitment and running research protocols in fMRI studies
• Experience in grant writing and editing
• Successful publication record
