UCLA is committed to training the next generation of clinicians on the topic of addiction medicine. We are currently recruiting PhD candidates for the NIH-funded, UCLA Fellowship in Addiction Medicine in Primary Care. Fellows accepted to this two-year program will complete a curriculum in research methods and have access to the extensive research and clinical resources of the UCLA School of Medicine. Research opportunities are available in a variety of academic and community-based settings, taking advantage of the diverse fabric of Los Angeles.

The training program is built around three components: 1)Research - Mentored experiences in conducting research is central to the program. 2)Academic Training - PhD fellows will be required to complete formal education in advanced statistical methods and will participate in ongoing seminars, peer review, and relevant conferences. 3)Professional Development – Fellows will obtain supervised professional experiences that focus on the skills necessary to succeed in academia (grant preparation, data analysis, manuscript preparation, presentation and teaching skills) as well as those necessary to succeed in clinical settings (skills for practice-based clinical research, building partnerships with key stakeholders in community agencies/clinics). Throughout these components, we focus on training and consideration of issues central to the ethical conduct of research, with an emphasis on the difficult and evolving issues of conducting research in resource-poor settings.

Resources and mentorship are available for fellows to pursue research in a variety of different areas related to addiction and primary care including but not limited to evidence-based behavioral and biomedical approaches to address HIV and addiction, behavioral health integration in primary care clinics, clinical trials for addiction medication development, treatment of addiction in primary care settings, addiction and HIV, prevention of substance abuse and substance-related harms.
