Notable & Quotable: What About Political Diversity?

The Wall Street Journal:

Abstract: Psychologists have demonstrated the value of diversity—particularly diversity of viewpoints—for enhancing creativity, discovery, and problem solving. But one key type of viewpoint diversity is lacking in academic psychology in general and social psychology in particular: political diversity. This article reviews the available evidence and finds support for four claims: 1) Academic psychology once had considerable political diversity, but has lost nearly all of it in the last 50 years; 2) This lack of political diversity can undermine the validity of social psychological science via mechanisms such as the embedding of liberal values into research questions and methods, steering researchers away from important but politically unpalatable research topics, and producing conclusions that mischaracterize liberals and conservatives alike.

Unfortunately, this is very true and we see that politics have invaded APS. Dubious research studies have been published in some APS journals proving how inferior are people with “right wing views.” I suspect that the persons who have carried out these “researches” have a deep hatred of people with “right wing views.” Needless to say that such individuals would be quite adept at justifying their actions. To be sure, this is nothing new. Go to any university and conformity and ideological dogma is enforced, as well as censorship of so-called “hate speech.” Additionally, laughable “scholarly” works promoting ideology has been a staple (cf, The Mismeasurement of Man, the Hite Report are the ones that come to mind, although there are many, many others). The American Psychological Association at one time was widely known for being politically correct and refused to acknowledge the existence of induced false memories because that fact contradicted feminist dogma that practically all females were sexually molested/raped by men.

It’s sad that APS journals have fallen into this quagmire.

And for the record, I do not hold many “right wing” viewpoints.
