Spontaneous social judgments affect our assumptions about the people around us. Nalini Ambady investigates how people perceive each other using “thin slices”— which are very brief observations — to examine the processes behind these judgments. Ambady also has a strong interest in how social and environmental factors influence our perception of others. In addition to her work on perception and social judgments, Ambady has studied stereotypes, nonverbal communication, culture and the brain, and the role of social and group memberships in interpersonal perception and relationships.
