Drawing from basic science research on emotion, we have argued that the time course of emotional responding is important for understanding emotion deficits in psychopathology, particularly in schizophrenia and depression. Drawing from experience sampling, behavioral, self-report, startle modulation, and fMRI studies, I will illustrate how the timing of emotion matters in psychopathology both in terms of understanding how emotion is (and is not) disrupted in different disorders and in terms of how to target our treatment efforts more effectively.
