Emotional Labor in the 21st Century: What Do We Know and Where Should We Go?

Over 25 years ago, Hochschild’s The Managed Heart introduced affective job demands, or 'emotional labor' (EL). I will review I-O Psychology research linking EL to organizational success and employee well-being, and discuss how the changing work context – management practices, technology, diversity – impacts future research and practice on emotional labor.
