The question of why people intentionally harm themselves has puzzled scholars for thousands of years. Self-harm continues to be a leading cause of death worldwide and many fundamental questions remain unanswered. This presentation describes recent advances in the understanding and prediction of suicidal behavior and promising directions for future research.
