How Do Writing Systems, Culture, and Age Influence How We Read?
To what extent do culture, writing systems, and age influence how we read? Recent research from my lab will be discussed examining this question. I will describe work comparing readers of Chinese and English with respect to eye movements (as indicators of cognitive processes) and the perceptual span; work on skilled deaf readers will also be reported. The results of a number of studies comparing older and younger readers will also be presented. Across the various studies, some interesting differences and similarities have emerged and will be discussed.
