Convergence: Connecting Levels of Analysis in Psychological Science
In the past, our field harbored distinct, and often competing, schools of thought that tackled different problems and produced findings that often appeared to diverge. Today, investigators attack shared problems at complementary levels of analysis and produce results that converge. Studies of people in a social world; mental systems of cognition and emotion; and biological mechanisms of the genome and the nervous system interconnect and yield an integrated psychological science. The APS 23rd Annual Convention displays, and celebrates, these advances in our field.

Organizational Efforts to Disseminate and Implement Empirically Supported Interventions in Health Care Systems

Thursday, May 24, 2012, 1:30 PM - 3:15 PM
Chicago Ballroom VIII

Lea R. Dougherty Chair: Lea R. Dougherty
University of Maryland, College Park

Co-organized by the Academy of Psychological Clinical Science (APCS) and the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology (SSCP)

This symposium will provide an overview of large-scale organizational efforts to increase the use of empirically supported treatments in health care systems. Speakers will describe the implementation and dissemination of empirically supported interventions within the Air Force (AF) and Veterans Affairs (VA) health care systems. Within these contexts, the following training and dissemination efforts will be discussed for the following treatments: prolonged exposure (PE) therapy, cognitive processing therapy for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for depression, and behavioral couples and family therapy.

Continuing Education: 2 APA Credits

Learning Objectives:

1. Summarize the large-scale organizational efforts to increase the use of empirically-supported treatments in health care systems.

2. Describe the implementation and dissemination efforts of empirically-supported interventions within the Air Force and Veterans Affairs health care systems.

3. Recognize differences between the training models and across the health care systems.

4. Discuss the dissemination efforts for the following treatments within the health care systems: prolonged exposure (PE) therapy, cognitive processing therapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for depression, and behavioral couples and family therapy.
