Approach and Avoidance Actions Modulate the Startle Reflex Independent of Emotional Valence

Fifty undergraduates performed a series of 24 actions (shown in previous research to reliably elicit approach and avoidance motives) while the startle reflex was periodically elicited. Results indicated that startles were largest during performance of simulated avoidance and smallest during performance of simulated approach.
