In-Group/Out-Group Membership Has Unexpected Effect on Recognition of Emotional Facial Expressions

We examined the impact of in-group/out-group membership on young adults’ ability to accurately classify emotional facial expressions of others. Results showed that gender played a larger role than age in emotional recognition. Contrary to expectations, however, participants were not better at correctly identifying emotions made by in-group than out-group members.
