In an fMRI study of the neural substrates corresponding to new synesthetic color experiences in an English-speaking grapheme-color synesthete, we observed activations in the bilateral superior parietal lobe and right temporal pole. V4/V8 activation was observed for English graphemes and words, but not for newly learned Chinese symbols and characters.
