Two studies found that participants’ romantic attraction to real-life potential romantic partners was unrelated to their stated ideal partner preferences. A third laboratory study found that participants’ ideal partner preferences predicted attraction to a romantic target only when meeting the target “on paper”, not in a live interaction setting.
