Common sense and research both support the idea of teaching through active learning. But most statistics classes use lectures that leave students uninvolved. We will perform and discuss a few demonstrations from our book, Teaching Statistics: A Bag of Tricks, and then share ideas on demonstrations, drills, and active-learning tricks such as having students work in pairs. We will also discuss reasons for the typical problems of statistics classes, challenges in implementing active learning, and ideas for training future instructors.
