Testing Enhances Memory Retention, But Which Test Format Is Better?

Abstract
The current study examined whether test format modulates the beneficial effect of testing on memory retention of studied material. We found that an initial short answer test after study, with feedback, yielded better performance on a delayed test than a multiple choice test or reading of answers to test questions.
