Abstract:
Asch's (1951) studies of majority influence hardly seem a hot topic, but it is believed that neither Asch nor others have captured the studies' moral and social complexities. A new theoretical approach illuminates average participants' behavior as "localized error to realize larger truth," and offers alternative predictions to conformist accounts.
