Opening Plenary Session: The Benefit of Doubt: Teaching Students the Value of Uncertainty
Carol Tavris

Thursday May 29, 2003; 9:00 AM - 10:15 AM
Regency VII
Primary Subject:  General

Abstract:
College is often threatening to students because it makes them question their certainties---a process quaintly called "education." Teachers can alleviate this threat by acknowledging the importance of passionate convictions, which guide and inspire us but can also keep us stuck in self-defeating habits and outmoded attitudes. This presentation will consider the drawbacks of both excessive certainty and excessive uncertainty and how we all might learn the benefits of doubt.
